Martesana: A perfetto pasticceria on the edge of Chinatown

“Let them eat cake!” Those are the famous words commonly attributed to Marie Antoinette, though there’s actually no record that she ever said such a thing. But it doesn’t really matter where the phrase came from – it’s good advice, and we’re happy to oblige. And we know just the place to indulge.

Located on the edge of Chinatown, Martesana will draw you in from the sidewalk with their colorful creations. From miniature to full-size, their treats are pretty as a picture.


The choices are unlimited, but the Postcards from Milan team opted for four miniature treats – tiramisu, the mango and passionfruit tart, the pistachio cake, and the chocolate orange cake. The tiramisu was the winner for us, with a fluffy melt-in-your-mouth texture that left us wanting more.


Although Martesana has the feel of a luxury patisserie, the prices are anything but expensive. The tiny cakes seen above are just €1 each, and are perfectly complimented with an espresso or an americano (also €1).

Their house speciality, Torta Martesana, was voted among the most irresistible cakes in Italy by the food blog Dissapore. If you’re not a cake person, opt for Martesana’s homemade chocolate selections.

Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. This place has been around since 1966, and for good reason – their pastry chefs are at the top of their game, taking home many awards through the years.
