Is Pizza AM the best pizzeria in Milan? You be the judge…

“Anyone who says that money cannot buy happiness has clearly never spent their money on pizza.” – Andrew W.K.

Of the thousands of pizzerias in Milan, one is bound to have the best pies…but which one is it? There’s no black-and-white answer to that age-old question. In fact, it’s a contentious subject that’s bound to lead to fierce debate between the Milanese. So although we can’t offer a definitive answer, we can tell you that one of the best rated establishments in the city is Pizza AM.

For such a tiny pizzeria, this place knows how to turn tables – and it’s a good thing, because hungry customers are typically pouring outside onto the street before it even opens. The sidewalk turns into a bit of a street party, which is owed to the fact that Pizza AM rewards its patient clientele with free snacks and prosecco while they wait.

Those less keen on standing outside can pop across the street to Palo Alto for a pre-dinner drink. The owner of Pizza AM has a gift – he seems to be able to predict with almost total accuracy when your table will be ready. He’ll happily point you in the direction of the bar and tell you a time to return.

If you come from the school of thought that the best restaurants focus on just a few select items and do them really well, you’ll appreciate Pizza AM’s approach of serving just seven types of pizza.

Proving once again that Italian pizzas are about fresh ingredients and simplicity, the menu at this small but incredibly colorful establishment offers the following pies: marinara, margherita, caprese, pasquale, positano, napulitana, and pometto pasquale.

Only 16 ingredients are used by this pizzeria. The dough is left to rise for 48 hours, the tomatoes are brought in from San Marzano, and genuine extra virgin olive oil is the only type ever used.

Beer and wine is of course on the menu, but be careful here – you’ll be expected to leave the table once everyone in your party has cleaned their plates…so there will be no leisurely sipping of cabernet. Don’t get caught out with a full glass which you then feel obliged to chug.

Go to Pizza AM for its lively atmosphere, its brightly painted walls, the puppets hanging from the ceiling, and the wooden parrot that stands guard over the guests. Reservations aren’t accepted, so you’ll have to join the street party or be one of the very first to arrive.
